Evaluation

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my remixing. I enjoyed using my own work in the process - it made me think about ways I could perhaps manipulate and combine images of my hand drawn or painted artworks on the computer in future to, really, create whole new artworks in a whole new medium. It was also very interesting being able to combine my painting with one of Rembrandt's; it made me think of the old masters who let their apprentices complete parts of their commissioned paintings. The remix process also opened my mind to the modern possibilities of artist collaboration.

Rembrandt Self Portrait c. 1663

This is the scanned image I used for my background in Photoshop. It is actually a close up of the face in Rembrandt's, 'Self-portrait With Maulstick, Palette and Brushes' c. 1663

A Photograph of My Original Imitations of a Rembrandt!

I cropped this photograph of my own work and copy and pasted it onto the scanned image of the original Rembrandt painting ( I did this twice in order to isolate each painting within the photograph.) The painting on the right was in the fist layer and covered in part by the painting on the left.

Remix Presentation

For the Remix assignment I layered two of my own paintings - imitations of a Rembrandt self portrait - onto a scanned image of an original Rembrandt. I played around with the scale of my own paintings (all this in Photoshop) in order to make them match the proportions of the original Rembrandt. I then used the eraser and brush tools to blend the images together (Which took a very long time i might add!) I also altered the contrast and brightness of the original images in order that the colours might match better when the three were placed together. So there we have it, a Rembrandt and Sacha collaborative masterpiece - well perhaps not quite.

FILM LOOP : Seagulls

While story boarding a short film about seagulls has its limitations, the one thing we could count on was the effectiveness of hot chips from 'The Flying Squid' in drawing a crowd of the quarrelsome creatures. our aim was to capture their comical behavior when presented with limited chips and numerous opposition, but also ended up getting some quite beautiful footage of the birds in flight. I think we all selected the more comedic action of the birds for our final cut, as this seemed the most entertaining of the footage.

COPYRIGHT

George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' a rip off of a Chiffons track? The court ruled YES. I had never heard the comparitive Chiffons track, but in listening to it I found the simmilarities were obvious enough to infer foul play. while the tempo of The Chiffons song is much faster and the lyrics are completely different, the tune of the song is virtually the same.

'Twelve Monkeys' - chair in the interrogation room:
YES, the chair is definitely coppied. The characteristic rectangular planes of which the chair is constructed make it easy to place, while the grid-like pattern on the wall behind the chair is also a distinctive feature which has been replicated.

Kier Smith: response to 'fair use' issues paper provided by the Australian government in 2005 - is it illegal? the short film of copied material he created does break copyright law, however, he makes no commercial gain from it. It should come under 'fair use' he states; we may then infer from the film that 'fair use' is somewhat innefective.

Critique of a Critique

Munn's brief critique of Prada's recent attempt to merge fashion with the cyber world describes a strange and not entirely successful amalgamation of fashion, film, on-line worlds and gaming. Munn manages to inspire interest in the subject ( as, I suppose, a good post should do as well as simply expressing personal opinion) giving the reader a brief yet very descriptive account of the subject - its content, the art behind it and the references it makes. He describes Prada's concept of clothing within their created cyberworld: "The main item of clothing...isn't put on, it's transferred. Another avatar appears to bestow the clothing, virally spreading the distinctive check texture from herself to our heroine." while Munn seems to have an appreciation for the separate elements of the film, he concludes that its overall effect is disappointing. Perhaps geeks just can't do fashion.

2007 BFA Graduates Showing at the Blue Oyster Gallery

At the end of last year I spent an afternoon viewing the 2007 BFA graduates work exhibited at the art school; it encourages me greatly to find that now some of that work is being displayed at the Blue Oyster Gallery. One work that is memorable to me, that is now on display was that of... Although the installation was not particularly appealing to me , I nonetheless was able to see the tremendous amount of skill and thought that was contained within the work. I also found the interactive nature to be very effective in immersing the audience in the work and, thus, it perhaps more effectively conveyed the artists intention. The work involves a landscape of torn cardboard boxes amongst which were placed (as if just, seemingly, abandoned) televisions displaying... Amongst this landscape sits a retro looking, plastic rocket ship which may be entered by the observer. the installation thus involves moving image which must be located by sound (as the televisions are hidden amongst the cardboard landscape) and a tactile, rocket ship built to be entered. The audience has clearly been very well considered in this work.

Imitating Rembrandt

Self portrait by Rembrandt 1669
after recently being assigned to make a painting incorporating the grid, I decided to take one of Rembrandt's self portraits, zoom in on the face and transfer it onto six wooden panels using a grid. Attention was paid to the natural divisions of the face, which also form a grid. I have found that much can be learned in imitating a master painter.

What I Think of Computers...

My home computer and I do not live in domestic bliss. In fact all my relations with computers are fraught with frustration and flares of blazing anger, leaving me with a general feeling of ill will towards technology. However, It would be unfair of me to blame computers entirely for our disfunctional relations thus far. Though their general moodiness and complex nature have disinclined me towards working with them, I understand that my favouratism of pen and paper and my inclination towards verbal abuse have not encouraged the establishment of a fruitful working relationship between them and myself.
